While most take excellent care of their oral health at home, you might be surprised to learn how many people neglect their teeth while traveling. Whether you are hitting the road for business or pleasure, your oral health still requires vigilant care.
Remembering to follow these three tips when you travel will help keep your smile in tip-top shape.
- Remember to Pack Your Oral Hygiene Supplies – Just because you’re not home doesn’t mean you can relax your hygiene routine. Be sure that you have your toothpaste, toothbrush, floss, and mouth guard if you wear one. Don’t leave your wet toothbrush in a closed container as bacteria can grow. Leave it out to dry after you’re finished using it until you’re ready to return home. If you use mouthwash at home, bring that with you as well, or pick up additional dental supplies once you reach your destination.
- Familiarize Yourself with the Area – Know where the closest emergency dentist or ER is located. If you get a toothache, call your dentist for instructions. However, if the pain is severe, call a local provider or head to the hospital. It is never wise to delay dental treatment as a small issue can become a big problem throughout one or two days.
- Practice Extra Vigilance – When people are on vacation or traveling for any reason, they may be tempted to indulge in habits that they limit when at home. Remember to drink water and add an extra brushing to counteract the threat of damage these festivities pose to your oral health.
- Being prepared for the unexpected is the best way to make the most of your travel plans. Don’t let a dental issue put a cramp in your agenda.
